The Figure
My art examines transformation and the tension between fragility and endurance. It emerges from an awareness of visibility and erasure – how certain bodies are seen while others remain marginalized. I examine the psychological and social boundaries that define who is permitted to be visible and who remains unseen. Throughout history, the female form has often been idealized, sexualized, censored, eroticized, and distorted by the male eye. My work questions these distortions.
A lover of contrast, I photograph the figure – full of softness and elegance, beauty and creative energy – against the aging, peeling textures of abandoned spaces. I create amongst the cracks and crevices of intimate and dynamic landscapes. Light contrasting darkness, life contrasting death, tininess contrasting vastness. I photograph the nude figure because I am telling an unabashedly raw story in an authentically raw and pure format. Our place in this world is small, but essential. Through these photographs, I study how light, texture, and the body can reveal the traces of survival and renewal.
