Artistic Statement

The work presented in Presence at Lancaster Art Vault is part of a larger body of work titled Beyond the Box. Within this series, Rebecca Carpenter explores transformation and the tension between fragility and endurance emerging from an awareness of visibility and erasure, and the ways certain bodies are seen while others remain marginalized.

Drawn to contrast, she places the figure; soft, expressive, and full of quiet energy - within the weathered textures of abandoned spaces. These environments, marked by time and decay, become active collaborators in the image. Light against darkness, life against erosion, the intimate against the vast. Each photograph exists within these tensions. The nude figure is central to this work, offering a direct and unguarded presence through which vulnerability, resilience, and authenticity can be explored.

A pivotal shift in both her life and artistic practice came through personal experiences with illness within her family, reshaping her understanding of time as finite and deeply consequential. From this perspective, her work began to more fully engage with themes of metamorphosis, limitation, and the pursuit of freedom.

While deeply personal, the work also reflects a broader, shared experience. The “boxes” we inhabit whether self-imposed or external are not hers alone. Through her images, Carpenter invites reflection on what it means to move beyond those confines: to question visibility, to reclaim space, and to live with intention in a world defined by contrast.
